about

Originally written in 1993 I put this song away because I felt it was too soon. I wonder if it is still too soon.

lyrics

I went to a party and what did I see
All the happy people, they were smiling at me
Well I didn't know it then that I'd be treated like this
But the words they were saying, everyone one I just missed
Come on everybody ain't got nothing to sell - just a little secret that I'm dying to tell

I met up with the man the people told me about
He had a voice just like an angel - never needed to shout
"You don't have to worry", he said, "Come on with me
And I'll take you to the place I know you're dying to see
So we hopped in his car, got right outta that place - heading for oblivion, we might as well be going to space

We gathered 'round the fire at his humble retreat
So many faces of the people I'd meet
He got out his guitar to teach us one of his songs
Sooner than I thought I heard myself sing along
The words were making sense to me, the music was fine - it all came together in a heavenly, etherial rhyme

Strike up a candle to brighten the night
Join with the others, shining so bright
Call all of your children and show them the way to the light

The next thing I knew police were shutting us down
They had tanks, and guns, and helicopters flying around
Noises through the window drove me out of my mind
I never thought that people could be so unkind
Only time is gonna save me, things are starting to smell - Lord, if this ol' boy's the savior, I'll thank you kindly send me to Hell

And strike up a candle to brighten the night
Join with the others, shining so bright
Call all of your children and show them the way, show them the way to the light
